We had a great time previewing and browsing the book fair today. Everyone made a personal wishlist which you can find today in your child's binder. Please feel free to come along and visit at any time. It is also open tomorrow during conference day. There is a fantastic range of books, and you can even ask our librarian, Mrs. Toeniessen, to show you Mrs. Wagner's wishlist!

Our math lessons follow the 'Daily 3' math format. We have a whole-class lesson, followed by work in our 'My Math' skills book. This work is usually completed independently. The whole-class lesson will usually start with a demonstration of a new skill using the Smartboard, and some guided practice, perhaps on mini whiteboards. Following the skills work, students split into three groups. One group works in a guided group with me, and we usually focus on problem-solving. We have special journals for this work. The rest of the class can choose 'Math by Myself' or 'Math with someone'. In Math by Myself, students can work on the computer on Xtra Math, or work on a task card. In 'Math with someone', students can pair up with a friend and choose a math tub activity, or a math game that we have previously practiced together. It is great to see the students develop their independence as they work on skills in partners or alone. We talk about 'Math stamina' - like building our math muscles!
We had a wonderful first day in our new school! We LOVE our new, spacious, open and clean classroom. We have so much room to spread out and work and we have a large window giving us natural light! We have rooms to visit for our specials classes, a cafeteria and gym. It was worth the wait!
Parents, if you haven't come to visit, please feel free to drop in. Dear Families,
I expect that you already received the news that we have an official move-in date for our new building: September 20th! We are so excited. We will start packing up next week. The staff got to visit the building on Monday so I took a couple of pictures of a classroom on the lower elementary hallway: Today we had a whole-school anti-bullying assembly, presented by Master Posey, a Taekwondo instructor. He had some important messages to share with all of the children. He also spoke about the important of 'eye control' (eye contact); 'body control' (self control, sitting still and being focused) and 'mind control' (getting ready to listen and think). Dear Families,
I hope that everyone is enjoying October so far. It is hard to believe that we are already approaching week 7 of school! I wanted to let you know about a few things that we are working on in class:
I hope that you received the letters today regarding the Xtra math program. It is a free web program that enables children to practice, and keep sharp, their math facts. We use it often in class and I would love for my students to use it at home whenever possible. It is important for first graders to master simple math facts - but the program will allow students to work at their individual levels. I want to send out a HUGE thank you to the families that have been donating items to our class, care of the Fall wishlist! You have no idea how much we value your donations. MANY THANKS! Tomorrow is Dress-Down Day for October. A recent 'clean' record of behavior will allow children to dress down. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about what we are learning and/or how you can help with homework. Sincerely, Mrs. Wagner. |
