Parents, please note the new date for the Awards Ceremony: Friday, February 28th, 1pm, in the Auditorium.
In First Grade we work on 'making connections' each time we read. Often we can make a 'Text To Self' connection where we can personally identify with the events, character or setting of the story. We can sometimes make a text-to text connection where we can name a story that is similar to the story we are currently reading, and sometimes we can think of events in the wider world (perhaps stories in the news) to be able to make a text-to-world connection. As you read with your children, ask them what kinds of connections they are able to make as they make more sense of the text they read and strengthen their comprehension skills. We had a terrific time on Family Math Night recently. Many students arrived with moms, dads, brothers and sisters to participate in some math related activities. Some of the first graders (and former first graders!) enjoyed teaching their families how to play various math games.
Parents,
As the 3rd Quarter begins, we are in need of the following supplies for our classroom:
Anything that you can contribute would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! As part of our celebrations for reaching the 100th day of school, the students participated in an energetic paired exercise activity. In pairs students held their clipboards and pencils ready to record results while they timed or counted various activities performed by their partners. These included: running in place for 100 seconds, standing perfectly still for 100 seconds, finding out where 100 steps would take them, and even making a silly face for 100 seconds. The trickiest tasks seemed to be: doing 100 jumping jacks, and standing on one leg for 100 seconds. The classroom was full of action, fun and laughter. HOW EXCITING THAT WE ARE OVER HALF WAY THROUGH THE SCHOOL YEAR AND 100 DAYS SMARTER! Time certainly flies! Back in December we had a very special day in 1st grade: Polar Express Day. Polar Express Day has become something of a tradition for first grade at TMSA. Over the course of the day we: enjoy the original story; wear our cozy pajamas; drink hot cocoa with marshmallows; enjoy a picnic in the classroom; watch the movie, and complete various learning activities related to the story. We had our chairs set out like a 'train' and couldn't board the Polar Express until we had each found a sparkly ticket that was hidden somewhere in the classroom! On January 14th, the lower elementary school gathered together in the gym for an exercise competition. Each class had a leader who led all of the students in a range of exercise routines. The classes had spent weeks practicing in their PE lessons with Coach McElroy. There was some tough competition in the other classes! Eventually, the judges chose Miss Kelly's 2nd grade class as the winning group.
I received some feedback during conference day yesterday that parents would like to see a writing task in the homework pack. So starting this week, please find a writing prompt in the pack. I am expecting students to write five or more sentences in response to the prompt. Please encourage your child to work on neat handwriting, finger spacing, careful spelling and lively sentences. It may help to use some scrap paper to create a 'bubble map' plan first, or simply just to talk through some ideas before writing.
