What a great evening the talent show proved to be! We are so very proud of Sid, Katie and Jordan for participating and being brave enough to perform their respective talents in front of such a large crowd. Sid played his violin, Katie hula-hooped and Jordan tap-danced to the song 'Happy'.
The panel of judges put Jordan in first place for the elementary category! We recently completed exciting projects as part of our study of solid and flat shapes and their attributes. Students had to go on a ‘geometry photography expedition’ with their families, choosing a location to visit. Some students went to the shopping mall, some looked around their neighborhoods or school grounds. They searched for familiar shapes and took photos. Students printed their pictures and made a picture book, each page showing a photograph and a description of the geometric concept. Everyone reported having a lot of fun creating their projects and being shape detectives! We are still in the process of presenting and sharing our projects and the projects are on display in our classroom.
Parents and Friends,
Please take a couple of minutes to nominate TMSA for a new (free) 'imagination playground' at the new location for TMSA. Here is the direct link: http://link.scholastic.com/YesConnect/HtmlMessagePreview?a=Di_Vbesc9RqJnpztqoQBejsX&Version=web THANK YOU! In 1st grade Math Club, we have been exploring tessellations. A tessellation of a flat surface is the tiling of a plane using one or more geometric shapes, called tiles, with no overlaps and no gaps. We looked at various examples of tessellating patterns in art images and everyone was exciting to be a detective and identify the images found in the work of the artist Escher. We investigated the types of shapes that would and wouldn’t tessellate and we have begun to create our own tessellating patterns.
